Buying Controlled Medicines With A US Prescription

by David "El Codo" Eidell

Published March 2003
First of all the US prescription is invalid in Mexico, so flashing it in a farmacia or at a snooping policeman is next to worthless.

A US prescription has two purposes, the first is to convince the Mexican doctors that your personal physician believes that the medicine is justified. Take note that Mexican will doctors scrutinize the prescription carefully and note whether or not the US doctor has authorized any refills.

The second purpose is to flash the prescription at a US Customs inspector who will use it as "weight" in consideration of allowing controlled medicines into the country. Even with a prescription in hand, however, if the agent suspects that the medicine will be abused he won't allow it to enter the country. Be prepared to verbally plead your case.

The only protection that you have in Mexico which separates you from a street corner pill junkie, is a farmacia photocopy of the Mexican doctor's prescription (NOT the American doctor's prescription).

Jokes are legion throughout the Mexican law enforcement and medical communities about strung-out Americans trying to score enormous amounts of controlled medicine with or without a valid prescription. Tales of Americans who vibrate while sitting in an examination room are both hilarious and sad. "I'm not addicted!" they wimper "It's my back! I need a couple thousand tablets of ------- to tide me past the bad part".
