A long-time People's Guide reader belatedly learns the sad news. Maybe this photo of Steve will cheer him up....

Dear Carl,

I purchased a copy of the "People's Guide to Mexico" back in the early 80's while I was attending college. It is well worn from years of reference despite the fact that I have never once ventured beyond Del Rio or Nuevo Laredo. I recently pulled it off the shelf and reacquainted myself with your South of the border adventures. On a whim, I searched the internet and came across your website. It may seem strange to say three years after the fact that I was saddened to hear the news of Steve's death. After having just re-read your accounts of the trip to the beach with Sonny the Hillbilly and the Gruntorama, the news hit me with an immediacy that was unexpected. Please accept my belated condolences.

Carl replies:

We greatly appreciate your letter. I use the term "letter" rather than "email" because the latter often seems just a little too 'lite' when someone has taken the time to find our address and compose such a thoughtful message.

Yes, I fully understand your reaction to the belated news of Steve's passing. We miss him every day, and in so many ways. He was the best of friends.

One of these days, when I have a bit more time, I'll be writing about Steve for the website. We also have some great photos of him -- I came across one last night, in fact, of the two of us when we were camped in the Oregon woods, working on a book and wearing ridiculous Mexican sombreros. (Later: here's the photo in the upper corner. I'm the conehead and Steve is the larger hairy one on the left.)

Lorena and I are spending the summer at our cabin in NW Washington, returning to Mexico in the late fall, when the monsoons blow in here.

all the best, Carl

Thank you for your personal reply. It's good to know you are REAL people!

Keith
